Still thinking that the new Canadian spam legislation is no big deal? Think again. The CRTC has imposed a $1.1 million fine against a Quebec-based company for violating the recently enacted legislation.
While the legislation itself is fairly draconian and ineffective in nature, it’s good to see that the CRTC is going after companies who actually seem to be intentionally spamming customers and not small businesses who've made an inadvertent mistake.
It remains to be seen if this fine will stand, as I can’t imagine the company wouldn't attempt to fight this in court. Also of note, the legislation still has no way of dealing with the vast majority of spam that originates outside of Canada's borders.
One thing is clear, though: as a business in Canada, you can’t simply ignore the legislation.
